I Saw The One Ring! 11/29/2002

I also saw a ton of other stuff, at the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum today. Andrew and I skipped school and Dad brought us.

To describe it in one word would be difficult. I can't choose between fantastic, amazing, glorious, wonderful, breathtaking, beautiful, fucking great (okay, that's two words).

They recreated some of the sets. Fangorn Forest, Helm's Deep, the Glittering Caves, the Ruins of Osgiliath, Arwen's room in Rivendell, the Dead Marshes (complete with spectral corpses!), Isengard Caverns, Saruman's chambers in Orthanc, and the caves and waterfall at Henneth Annun.

There were all sorts of costumes: armour of Rohan and Gondor and Orcs, Frodo, Merry, Pippin (with his Elven brooch missing, on purpose... *wink*), Sam (Sam's backpack was there too, with all his pots and pans *grin*), Legolas, Aragorn, Gandalf the White, Saruman, Wormtongue, Arwen, Elrond, Rohan refugees, Eowyn, Theoden, Faramir.

Weapons: Orc crossbow, sword and shield, Legolas's bow, quiver and knives, Aragorn's sword and hunting knife, Sting, various other swords, and yes, even the Shards of Narsil.

Jewellry and accessories: Arwen's necklace she gives to Aragorn, Boromir's horn, Eowyn's necklace, Arwen's and Elrond's crowns, an assortment of pipes, lembas, Elven rope, Aragorn's ring, and of course, the one, the only, (well, one of about ten) The One Ring!!! Really, though, they made several Rings to use for various people and camera shots, but the one they had at the ROM was the One that Elijah Wood carried throughout the movie.

All over the place there were pictures from the movie and screens playing the trailers. So. Good. The guide-book-thing has excellent pictures as well as information on the making of the movie, like the CGI work. Apparently, each of the 10 000 Orc soldiers that storm Helm's Deep are CGI characters created with crazy software that allowed them to give each one its own Artifical Intelligence. So each had their own attacks and thoughts about the scene and reacted accordingly. Quite cool. I have a distinct feeling that I am going to love Miranda Otto as Eowyn. She just looks so damn cool in all the pictures and the trailers and I love the character.

Hell, I have the distinct feeling that Adam is going to have to drag me out of the theatre again.

If you had any idea what I was talking about and can get your ass to Toronto, go see this. They extended it a week to December 8. Ohhh it's so cool. Dad's friend Gerry, it turns out, works there and he pointed out some stuff to us, like Orc blood left on the Rohirrim armour, and the deliberate leaving-off of Pippin's elven brooch. If you've read the books, you know where it is. Apparently, there was a cloth over the palantir in Saruman's chambers, but someone stole it. Another item people have been stealing are the "do not touch" signs. Heh. And if anyone can remember the Elven word for their rope, tell me.

Pushing You Down, And All Around 11/24/2002

WORD OF THE DAY: lacuna

Katie's dad's funeral was yesterday. It was a really nice service. Beth laughed during the service, which was a good sign. Mike, Katie's older brother, was one of the pallbearers. Her mom read this poem she'd written about him which was really good. The service had to be moved to a church nearby because the funeral home chapel was too small. Lots of people. He had an honour guard of around 30 people -- guys from the hockey and baseball teams he played on. I cried a fair bit... it was really hard not to. The minister did a really good job. Afterwards we went outside and down to their van, and I stood there for a long time hugging Katie. And then Pat did, and Adam, and Heather, and Sean. At the cemetary they released a dove. It was frickin' freezing, Mr. Bigglesworth! So we went back to Kendal school for the reception, and there was lots of food and we talked and laughed and stuff. A guy from the rec association went up and gave Beth, Mike, Katie and Brian each one of the jerseys he wore, and announced that they were retiring his numbers. Adam and I had a sprinkle war. Pat and I went "Mission: Impossible" style to the dessert table.

So yeah. Kinda sorta good stuff.

And Reach starts this week. Wahoo!

Mahh... 11/20/2002

WORD OF THE DAY: proficient

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate November? Well, I do. You know why?

BECAUSE BAD SHIT HAPPENS.

LIKE PEOPLE DYING.

I already talked about Emily's dad. He was manic-depressive and overdosed on his medication two weeks ago and died.

Yesterday, Katie's dad died. Out of the blue, like that. They're not quite sure how, but they suspect a blood clot. She was called out of third period yesterday (she had Biology, I had English). Her mom had come to school. Then, apparently, she went back like nothing had happened. She wasn't allowed (I don't know if this was self-imposed or what) to tell the basketball team because they had a game that night (which they lost), and one of the girls sat in front of her. So she tells Heather and Anita quite plainly on the way home. Mrs. Löster was calling people; said she tried calling me for two hours but, ya know, there's a little thing called the internet and... Andrea was on. I was at work until eight. Got online, talked to Heather, and she told me. Then I went to Heather's at like, quarter to eleven and stayed there until midnight. When I got home I wrote a poem, which you can find here.

Because I fucking hate November.

Went to Katie's tonight to hang out and talk. Erika came too; called Heather but she had to work. Ate food. They have tons of food now, heh. The viewing's on Friday, funeral Saturday, I'm going to both. There's a 2-4 viewing, which I'm going to go to with the Lösters (they have spare last, and are taking a bunch of council people), and then I'll ask Katie there if she wants me to come to the 7-9 one. Mom says they're usually really boring. Pat made two cards: a smaller one for close friends and a big bristol board one for everyone. The small one has pretty flowers, and he put drifting feathers on the big one.

I fucking hate November.

The Face You Make When You Masturbate 11/13/2002

WORD OF THE DAY: lachrymose

Okay, so the last "update" wasn't anything. Stupid thing messed up on me and I didn't feel like writing it again.

Sooooo I'll start at the beginning of the month. We went to Quebec City! The trip was soooooo much fun! Pardon my lack of proper accents on names, as I list the highlights, which include, in no particular order: Many Adam Sandler movies, the folk dancing at Erabliere du Cap, 50 cent hot chocolate in the library, the intense amusement Heather, Anita, Katie and I felt about all of us being able to fit in our closet with room to spare, Pat and Heather's Poutine Creation, Excalibur (the coolest store EVAR), French porn, La Blonde de mon Pere, Frustration, Improv, slipping and falling on the Dufferin Terrace, and so. much. more.

Really, it was the funnest thing ever. Excalibur is the best store in the world, full of medieval and fantasy clothing, accessories, figurines, and weapons. There was this REALLY cool sword with green stones in the handle.

Shopping was quite fun, especially in Upper Town. We went to this place called Mikes for lunch and it was really good. There, Heather got minestrone soup au gratin, and she barely got through the cheese and croutons to the soup. So naturally, she didn't eat much of the poutine. She and Pat threw in all sorts of stuff, like the butter and the mayo from the packets on the table, ketchup, everything. We took pictures. Heather found her semi dress at Le Chateau. I got a necklace of a little sword, and a scarf.

Now you're probably wondering about the porn. Well, in our hotel room, we found the porn channel. It was HILARIOUS! Porn is actually the funniest thing in the world. The first thing we saw was this weird thing with shaking and jingling jewelry and music that went like bow-wow-wow-chica-bow-wow. And then after was this movie with a guy who had nightmares about people having sex while he was having sex. He looks up and all of a sudden the girl's like, riding a motorcycle and then there's these guys on his couch, and then he screams. We went to bed after that.

The improv show was quite simply one of the greatest parts of the whole trip. The host, Pat, looked like Bradford How. Olivier was hot. Roxanne was really cool, I got to go up for this one sketch and worked with her. It was hilarious, especially when they made fun of Whitney. LOL.

Daniel and I both want to go back, and Dad said that maybe this summer we can go, which would be lovely.

Other events recently...

Emily's dad died on Tuesday the fifth, the day after we got back from Quebec City. Apparently he was manic-depressive and overdosed on his medication. Sarah A. is really good friends with Emily and their families are close. When Emily's family moved out here, Emily was four and Sarah's mom babysat for them from then until Emily and her sister were old enough not to be babysat. So Sarah asked all of Emily's friends if they could give some money to get flowers or something for Emily and her family. She ended up getting over two hundred dollars. Pat made a big card out of brisol board that looked really nice and the inside got filled with messages and they went onto the back too. That just made my day, really, just knowing that everyone got together for her. She was away from school the rest of the week, but came to choir at Pat's on Saturday and was back at school Monday. Which was also her birthday. Quite a sucky situation, quite frankly, but she's doing rather well from what I can see.

The penny drive is on at school. The lead has been passed back and forth so many times that it's not even funny. It seems that someone will get into first place and then drop back to third or fourth while Mr. Roche's class stays at a steady second. Someone is Ms. McCracken's class brought in a huge SACK of PENNIES today, which Dylan, Erika, Pat, Dana and I counted. Ended up being about fifty bucks, putting them into the lead for today. And we broke one thousand dollars today!!!!!!! Last year we only got about six hundred and student council decided to make up the rest so we would have a full thousand to give to War Amps, but as of today we have $1078.26. This is fucking great. Even though we have to count it all. We've had some good laughs this past while.

Semiformal is coming up, and Heather and Anita are running it as I may have mentioned. Katie's doing the decorations and I'm helping her out. The theme is Paris -- lights and love. Katie wants to make a huge papier mache Eiffel Tower. Rather ambitious. But yeah, it's just going to be a lot of little white Christmas lights and other stuff done in white, silver and red. I still need my dress... We tried on lots in Quebec. I even tried on a strapless... historical event there, hehe. Found some nice ones. Gotta go shopping. Even though I have no money. But there's one more pay before semi, which is good. And Casey's coming! Heather kinda made him come as her date, and he keeps asking me if she told me that he was coming. Which she did. It's a long weekend (P.A. Day) so he'll probably come on Thursday and stay until Sunday, which'll be lovely. And then she's going up to Ottawa for New Year's Eve.

Ummm... what else... yeah. Generally, I'm doing well in school, everyone's healthy aside from the usual colds and such from this time of year, Pat's choir project for my church's Dickens reading is going quite well, and I'm ALMOST finished this notebook I'm working in. Really, I slacked off a lot over the summer. I started it in APRIL and I'm just finishing it up now. Tsk to me.

I had so much fun when I went to Quebec last May. Reading this reminded me of how badly I want to go back.
Are you going to the semi-formal? Mine is coming up soon too but I think I'm gonna pass. Graduation and prom and grad pictures don't come cheap. Damnit. [Static Inertia]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RYN: You're kidding me right? $20?? Our semi-formal is about $60. Crazy? I think yes.
Prosti-tots? That's the funniest thing I've heard all day. Thank you for that. :) [Static Inertia]

4 huh? Those don't happen to include yours and Heather's tickets to they? [Static Inertia]
